Beautiful wakizashi, with
a large billowing hamon consisting of O gunome toran. Hamon
has lots of ashi and is made up of nie. Small kinsuji appears
in places. The grain is a very well made itame with chikei and
ji nie. Blade is very sound, no flaws and the boshi is very
healthy as well. Sword has a very strong shape, and should paper
well. Tang is ubu 2 holes and unsigned. From looking at
the file marks, one can see that they are the same type used by the
famous Tsuda Sukehiro School. This is one of the most famous
Osaka Shinto Schools from the early Edo period that was well known
for their flamboyant hamons.
The mountings for this sword are very fabulous. Solid silver
fuchi kashira and kojiri, with a high relief carved design of Peony
flowers (Botan). Menuki are gold shi shi dogs sitting upon a
Buddhist item. The wrap, although at first glance looks new,
is more likely old. It is a very nice dark blue Jabara maki,
this is a very special type of string wrap, utilizing 4 strands for
the wrap instead of the normal 2. Seppa are gold foiled showing
that they spared no expense in creating this mount. Tsuba is
a solid shakudo plate with very high relief carving of Shi Shi dogs
and Peony flowers. The Shi Shi and flowers are well carved,
done in gold. Kurikata is silver with beautiful shitodome for
the holes. The scabbard is an unbelievable piece of art in itself.
Cut ribbed shiny black lacquered for the base, with very high
quality gold lacquered Shi Shi dogs playing among the peony flowers.
As one can tell, this is very top class lacquer work, the gold
content used for the main theme is very high, and they also took time
and expense by using mother of pearl inlay for the dogs eyes.
This is a very, very expensive style of painting, and would cost a
fortune to try to reproduce the same quality today (more than the
asking price of the sword). This sword has come from a very
old collection here in the US. It even still has its original
storage box, which states that this box is for a wakizashi with mountings
of the design of Shi Shi Botan (Lion dog and Peony).
For those that appreciate top class original mounts. It is very
rare to find such a nice original mount in this excellent condition
WITH its original box. |
